("PINK EYE")

The conjunctiva is the thin, reddish pink covering that lines the inner surface of the eyelids.  Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of those membranes.  It may be caused by a bacteria or virus, an allergy, an injury, or foreign matter (such as dirt, pollen, foxtail grass awns, etc.).  Often it is difficult to determine the exact cause. This condition may also be associated with other bodily diseases.

DIAGNOSIS:

A thorough eye examination will often reveal the nature of the problem.  Sedation is occasionally  necessary to prevent injury to the eye.  Laboratory tests (swabs, cultures, blood tests, etc.) are sometimes  helpful, especially in determining the underlying cause of the inflammation.

TREATMENT:

1. Prevent additional irritation to the eyes !!  A special collar is often placed around the pet's neck to prevent him/her from rubbing at the eye (because it hurts), thereby causing additional damage.
    
2. Medication for home use is often necessary to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
    
3. Treatment of underlying conditions (allergies, etc.) may need attention, especially for chronic, recurring conditions.

NOTIFY THE DOCTOR IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING OCCUR:

• Your pet constantly rubs his eyes along the carpet or with the feet.
• You are unable to apply the medication.
• The condition is not starting to get better after a few days.
